Installing and starting

Windows says "Windows protected your PC".

This is Windows SmartScreen. It warns about programs from publishers it does not know yet, and SnazzyFoto is not code-signed. Click More info, then Run anyway. Only do this for a file you downloaded from the SnazzySoft website. More in Install SnazzyFoto.

The download or the installation takes a long time.

The installer is small (about 150 MB), so on a normal connection it downloads in a few minutes. Let the installer finish; on its last page, leave Run SnazzyFoto ticked to open it. The AI files are not in the installer: they are downloaded later, the first time a feature needs them — see AI downloads. With all of them SnazzyFoto takes about 3 GB, so keep a few GB free on your disk.

SnazzyFoto asks about unsaved changes when I close it.

The Photo Editor has changes that are not saved in a project yet. Click Save to save the project, Don't Save to close without saving, or Cancel to keep working. Develop never asks: it remembers your settings for each photo by itself.

AI tools

The AI download fails, is slow, or I have no internet.

An AI feature needs its files on this computer before it can run the first time (see AI downloads). If the Download AI files window shows an error:

  • Try again. Use the feature again and click Download. A download that stopped continues where it stopped, so nothing is downloaded twice.
  • Check the internet connection, and any firewall or VPN, if it says Couldn't download the AI files. Check the internet connection and try again.
  • Free up disk space if it says Not enough free disk space: about … is needed. The message tells you how much.
  • A damaged file (The downloaded file was damaged. Please try again.) is never used; just try again.
  • Slow connection? The biggest downloads are about 500 MB each. Let it run; you can keep the window open while you do something else.

No internet where you work? Download everything beforehand, while you still have a connection: ℹ About › AI downloads… › Download all. See Download everything at once. Features whose files are already downloaded always work offline.

An AI tool says something was "not found" or that a script is required.

Faceswap, Select Subject, AI masks, AI Denoise, merging and auto-sort all use SnazzyFoto's AI files. Messages such as Python not found: …, Model ONNX not found: …, Script not found: … or Release builds require the protected script: … mean part of them is missing.

  1. Check your antivirus. If it put a SnazzyFoto file in quarantine, restore it and allow SnazzyFoto.
  2. Open ℹ About › AI downloads…. If a download does not say Ready, click Download all.
  3. If that doesn't help, install SnazzyFoto again from the Download page, over the current one. Your settings, licence and AI downloads are kept.
  4. Don't move or delete files in SnazzyFoto's program folder or its AI files.
"… is a SnazzyFoto Supporter feature."

Faceswap, Select Subject, Remove with AI, Portrait's new backgrounds and face tools, camera RAW files, AI masks, Sky Replacement, Lens Blur, AI Denoise, HDR merge, and auto-sort need a Supporter licence on this computer. If you have donated, open Help › Support SnazzyFoto… in the Photo Editor: it should say Supporter. If it says Free version, click I already donated – sign in. See Free and Supporter.

The AI takes a long time.

The AI runs on your computer's processor, so it does not need a special graphics card, but it takes a moment: from several seconds for one face swap to a minute or more for AI Denoise on a large photo. A busy screen shows that SnazzyFoto is working; let it finish. Closing other heavy programs helps.

Faceswap finds no faces, or not all of them.

Very small, turned or covered faces are often missed. See Faceswap › Questions.

Face Restoration (GFPGAN) is greyed out.

Its model is missing. See Faceswap › Questions.

Develop and graphics

"Develop needs WebGL 2 graphics, which isn't available on this computer."

Develop draws your photo with the graphics chip, using WebGL 2. This message means SnazzyFoto could not use it. Portrait needs it too and says WebGL2 is not available on this computer. SnazzyFoto normally switches to slower software drawing when the graphics chip can't be used, so you rarely see these messages.

  • Update the driver of your graphics card from the website of its maker (Intel, AMD or NVIDIA), then restart the computer.
  • Through Remote Desktop or in a virtual machine, the graphics chip is often not available. Use SnazzyFoto on the computer itself.
  • The graphics built into the processor (Intel, AMD) are enough; you don't need a separate graphics card.
  • The Photo Editor, Faceswap and Collage don't need WebGL 2 and keep working.
"The graphics card was reset" or "The graphics card couldn't process this photo".

Windows sometimes resets the graphics card, for example after a driver update or when the computer wakes from sleep. Develop then says The graphics card was reset. Reloading the photo… and carries on by itself.

If it says the graphics card couldn't process this photo, it probably ran out of graphics memory. Close other heavy programs (games, video editors, many browser tabs) and try again. Very large photos at 100% zoom need the most memory.

RAW files

A RAW file shows the Supporter feature window.

Camera RAW files are a Supporter feature. In the free version, convert the photo to JPEG in your camera's own software, or donate to open RAW files directly. See Free and Supporter.

"Couldn't read this RAW file."

SnazzyFoto reads the RAW files of Sony, Canon, Nikon, Panasonic Lumix, Fujifilm, Olympus/OM, Pentax, Leica, Hasselblad, Phase One, Sigma, Samsung, Minolta and Kodak cameras, and DNG files from any maker. If one doesn't open:

  • Copy the file from the camera card again; a file that was not copied completely cannot be read.
  • A very new camera may not be supported yet. Convert the file to DNG with a free DNG converter, and open the DNG.

Exporting

My export is smaller than my photo (2048 pixels).

The free version exports at most 2048 pixels on the long side. If the Photo Editor's status bar shows Free version: export max. 2048 px, that is the reason. A one-off donation unlocks full resolution — see How the 2048 px limit works.

If you have donated but still get 2048 pixels:

  • Open Help › Support SnazzyFoto…. If it does not say Supporter, click I already donated – sign in with the account you donated with.
  • Export again after activating. Files exported before stay small.
  • In Develop, also check the size settings in the Export window (see Export from Develop).
A picture I paste into another program is smaller.

In the free version, pictures copied to the Windows clipboard are also limited to 2048 pixels on the long side. Inside SnazzyFoto, copy and paste stays at full size.

"Export failed: …"

The file could not be written. Check that the folder still exists and that you can save files there, that the disk is not full, and that the file is not open in another program. Then try again, or choose another folder.

Disk space

Does SnazzyFoto fill up my disk?

No. SnazzyFoto keeps some working files to stay fast, and cleans them up by itself:

  • Photo Editor — for large pictures, part of the undo history is kept on the disk while you work. It is deleted when you close SnazzyFoto (after a crash, at the next start).
  • Develop — decoded RAW files (the 5 most recent, at most 3 GB), AI Denoise results (at most 5 GB) and filmstrip thumbnails (the 3000 newest). Older ones are removed by themselves.
  • Other temporary files — copies made while exporting and Faceswap results you didn't save. They are deleted when you close SnazzyFoto, or at the next start.

The temporary files are in %TEMP%\snazzyfoto (type it in the File Explorer address bar). If you need the space right away, close SnazzyFoto and delete that folder: nothing of yours is lost. Your photos, exports and .snazzy projects are never kept there.

Colour themes

My colour theme went back to Dark.

Colour themes other than Dark are a Supporter feature, so the free version shows Dark. Your choice is not lost: a theme you picked (also one picked or applied in the free version) comes back by itself as soon as this computer is activated. See Colour themes.

More help

Where can I get help?
  • Open this Help Center from SnazzyFoto: Help Center on the Home screen, or Help › Help Center (online) in the Photo Editor.
  • Search this Help Center: the search box at the top finds words in every article.
  • The box at the bottom of each help page shows how to get more help.
  • When you ask for help, include your SnazzyFoto version (click ℹ About in the top bar), what you did and what happened, and a screenshot. For a Faceswap problem, also copy the log with ⎘ (Copy log).
