Remove with AI

Remove people, objects, signs or wires from a photo in the Photo Editor: select them and choose Edit › Remove with AI; the AI fills in the background on a new layer. A Supporter feature.

Remove with AI makes something disappear from a photo — a passer-by, a sign, a power line, a tree in the wrong place. Select it, and the AI paints in what would have been behind it. It runs on your own computer. Supporter

Remove something

  1. Open the photo in the Photo Editor.
  2. Select what should go, a little generously, with the Lasso (L), a Marquee (M) or another selection tool. Include its shadow. See Selections.
  3. Choose Edit › Remove with AI, or press Shift + Ctrl + Delete.
  4. Wait a few seconds while the AI works (a little longer on older computers).
  5. The filled-in part appears on a new layer called AI removal, above the layer you were on, and the selection is gone.

Your photo itself is not changed: the fix is a layer of its own. Hide it with its eye in the Layers panel to compare, lower its opacity, paint on it with the Eraser to bring back part of the original, or delete it. Ctrl + Z undoes the whole step.

Without a selection, SnazzyFoto says: Select what should go first (lasso, marquee or brush selection), then use Remove with AI. The command is greyed out in the menu until something is selected.

Tips for a clean result

  • Select a bit more than the object, with some of the surroundings. The AI needs to see the edges to continue them.
  • One thing at a time. Several smaller removals usually look better than one huge selection.
  • Plain surroundings work best: sky, grass, sand, a wall. Busy patterns, faces or text behind the object are harder; try a second pass on what is left, or fix the rest with the Clone Stamp (S).
  • The AI looks at the whole visible picture, all layers together, around your selection.
  • For small spots and dust, the Remove tool in Develop is quicker. In the Photo Editor, the Spot Healing Brush (J) removes them with one click or a short stroke, the Patch tool fixes larger areas, and the Clone Stamp (S) copies texture from one place to another by hand.

In the free version

Remove with AI is a Supporter feature: in the free version it opens the Supporter feature window. The healing tools and the Clone Stamp work in the free version too. See Free and Supporter.

Questions

It says "The selection could not be filled."

The AI could not run. Most often the AI files that come with SnazzyFoto are missing or damaged, for example after an interrupted install. Install SnazzyFoto again. See Fixing common problems.

The filled part looks soft or smeared.

Very large selections give the AI little to work from. Remove the object in two or three smaller parts, or select more of the surroundings so it can see more of the texture.
