SnazzyCut installs like any other Windows program: download the installer, run it, and it adds SnazzyCut to the Start menu and your desktop. It works straight away, without an account or a licence key.

Download

  1. Open the Download page on this website.
  2. Under SnazzyCut, click Download next to Windows. The page also shows the version number and the size of the file.
  3. Wait for the download to finish. The file is in your Downloads folder; its name starts with SnazzyCut and ends with setup.exe.
My browser says the file "isn't commonly downloaded". Is that a problem?

No. Browsers say that about new programs that few people have downloaded yet. Choose Keep (in Edge you may have to open the … menu next to the download first). Only download SnazzyCut from this website.

Install

  1. Double-click the file you downloaded.
  2. If Windows shows a blue Windows protected your PC window, click More info, then Run anyway. See why Windows warns below.
  3. The installer asks who to install SnazzyCut for. Only for me is the simple choice and does not need an administrator password. Anyone who uses this computer (all users) installs it for every Windows user and asks for administrator rights.
  4. Choose the folder to install into. The folder it suggests is fine.
  5. Click Install and wait a minute.
  6. On the last page, leave Run SnazzyCut ticked and click Finish.

The installer also puts a SnazzyCut shortcut on your desktop and in the Start menu, and makes SnazzyCut project files (.scp) open in SnazzyCut when you double-click them.

Why Windows warns: "Windows protected your PC"

Windows SmartScreen shows this warning for programs from a publisher it does not know yet. SnazzyCut is not code-signed (signing needs a paid certificate), so Windows shows Unknown publisher. The warning does not mean something is wrong with the file.

  1. Click More info (the small link under the text).
  2. Click Run anyway, which appears at the bottom.
Warning

Only do this for a file you downloaded from this website's Download page. If you got a SnazzyCut file anywhere else, delete it and download it again from here.

The first launch

When SnazzyCut starts, a small window with the SnazzyCut logo appears first. It shows what the app is getting ready, and goes away by itself after a few seconds. Then the Home screen opens.

The Home screen, the first thing you see after the start-up window.
The Home screen, the first thing you see after the start-up window.
  • From the Home screen you start a new project, drop your files to get a first cut, or reopen a recent project. See The Home screen.
  • SnazzyCut starts in your Windows language if it is English, Bahasa Indonesia, Bahasa Melayu, Español or Filipino, and in English otherwise. Change it with the Language menu on the left of the Home screen, or the 🌐 button at the top of the editor.
  • If you open SnazzyCut by double-clicking a project file, it skips the Home screen and opens that project.
Tip

SnazzyCut runs only once at a time. If it is already open and you double-click a project file, the running SnazzyCut comes to the front and opens it, asking first if you have unsaved changes.

Update to a new version

From version 1.0.1, SnazzyCut updates itself. A few seconds after it starts, it checks for a new version. When there is one, it asks A new version is available (…). Do you want to update? and shows what's new.

  1. Choose Update now. The update downloads in the background — usually only the parts that changed — and you can keep working; a small badge shows the progress.
  2. When it is ready, choose Restart & install. SnazzyCut asks about unsaved work first, then installs the update and opens again by itself.

Later asks again the next time you start SnazzyCut. Skip this version stays quiet until a newer version comes out. To check yourself, choose Help › Check for Updates…. Without an internet connection nothing is shown at start-up.

Your settings, presets, AI keys, the recent-projects list and your Supporter licence are kept. They are stored apart from the program, in %APPDATA%\SnazzyCut, which an update does not touch. Your projects and videos are your own files, wherever you saved them, so they are not touched either.

Older versions, a Mac or the portable copy: download the new version from the Download page and run it over the old one — you don't have to uninstall first. (On a Mac, Update now opens that page for you.)

To see which version you have, choose Help › About SnazzyCut. The version is also shown under the logo on the Home screen.

Uninstall

  1. Open Windows Settings › Apps › Installed apps (on Windows 10: Apps & features).
  2. Find SnazzyCut in the list. It is shown with its version number, for example SnazzyCut 1.0.0.
  3. Click … next to it (on Windows 10: click it), then Uninstall.

Uninstalling removes the program only. Your projects and exported videos stay where they are. Your settings and licence stay in %APPDATA%\SnazzyCut, so they are still there if you install SnazzyCut again. To remove them too, type %APPDATA% in the File Explorer address bar, press Enter and delete the SnazzyCut folder.

Tip

Moving to a new computer? Install SnazzyCut there and sign in with Help › Register…. If your donation is already used on the old computer, unlink that one first — see Free and Supporter.
